Delicious Homemade Caramel Apple Cider Donuts

This recipe yields 12 donuts and takes about 45 minutes to make.

Ingredients:

  • 2 6-cavity donut pans
  • Non-stick cooking spray
  • 1 3/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/4 teaspoon baking powder
  • 3/4 teaspoon fine salt
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon grated nutmeg
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, room temperature
  • 3/4 cup light brown sugar
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs at room temperature
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup apple cider
  • Ghirardelli caramel sauce

Step 1

Make yourself a cup of coffee.

Step 2

Pre-heat the oven to 350 degrees. Lightly grease the donut pans, I always use a paper towel to lightly spread the spray which helps avoid darker bottoms. In a bowl, add the flour, baking powder, salt , 1 teaspoon cinnamon and nutmeg and mix to combine.

Step 3

In a stand mixer with the paddle attachment, add in 10 tablespoons butter, brown sugar and 1/4 cup granulated sugar and mix on a medium speed until light and fluffy. Add your eggs and don’t forget to occasionally scrape the sides.

Step 4

Grab the flour mixture you set aside and add a little at a time with the mixer on low speed. Then, in a slow stream, add your apple cider.

Step 5

Now that your batter is ready, it is time to fill your donut pants. You will want to fill these up 2/3 of the way full , you do not want to fill them past the hole. There are a few ways to fill them, you can either spoon it, create your own piping bag (add batter into large ziploc bag until 1/5 full, twist ziploc bag and cut the corner), or use a piping bag. Now bake for 12 to 15 minutes, rotate the pans halfway through and use a toothpick to check the consistency. You will want them to come out golden brown.

Step 6

While these are baking, combine the remaining 1/2 cup sugar and cinnamon. Then melt 6 tablespoons of butter in the microwave. Once the donuts are finished baking, let cool and remove. Now, spread the melted butter over the donuts and generously cover with the cinnamon sugar, flip and repeat.

Step 7

Drizzle caramel sauce over the top of the of the donuts and enjoy!

As some of you may know, Apple Cider Donuts are a fall staple in the northeast. With Caleb being from New York, we have been in search for some. Living in Austin, TX we were only able to find these ready to eat at Trader Joes, which is why I decided to try baking them at home!
